In Brazil, nationality can be acquired through various modalities as established by the current legislation. This text will present the main ways to acquire Brazilian nationality.

Naturalization is one of the possible paths to obtain Brazilian nationality. Ordinary Naturalization is intended for immigrants who hold indefinite residence authorization and have resided in Brazil for at least four years. Extraordinary Naturalization allows foreigners who have resided in Brazil for over 15 years to benefit from a faster process of obtaining Brazilian nationality.

Another option is Provisional Naturalization, granted to immigrants, children, or adolescents who have resided in Brazil before reaching the age of 10. In this case, the request must be made through their legal representative. Definitive Naturalization consists of converting provisional naturalization into definitive naturalization and must be requested within two years after the foreigner reaches legal adulthood.

Finally, there is Special Naturalization, intended for foreigners who have been spouses or partners for at least five years of active members of the Brazilian diplomatic service, individuals in the service of the Brazilian State abroad, and immigrants employed in a Brazilian diplomatic mission or consular office for more than 10 uninterrupted years.
